My name is Breanna and I am a junior at Mound Westonka High School. My passion is art; I love painting, drawing, and filmmaking. My favorite form of expression, however, is photography. I enjoy the idea of capturing meaningful experiences with my camera and sharing them with others.
When I heard about Girls Design the World STEAM program, I was immediately drawn to the art aspect. I was also excited about the opportunity to work with other girls to solve problems not only in our communities, but around the world. I have already met some wonderful people and have been inspired by many of the experiences so far. One night, we stayed at the museum and got to sleep under “6QUEJ5,” a work of digital art showcasing asteroids by Jennifer Steinkamp, which was very memorable. Earlier in the evening, when we had the opportunity to talk with the artist herself and learn about why she creates 3-D art, I was drawn to how passionate she was about the piece and her career.
I am looking forward to learning from other artists that I will meet through this program and seeing how women, as the minority, succeed in their professions. I am also excited to learn about environmental issues in my community like water purity; the group that I am working in will be exploring urban runoff in our Minnesota lakes and rivers. I hope my team can help come up with workable solutions to this problem, and I can use my photography skills to communicate this important issue to our community.
