What do you stand on?

There are so many environmental challenges facing the planet, most of which are caused by those dwelling on it. We live on and treat this planet like we have a spare one to run to, which is not the case (if it were, I’d go hang out there all the time). Each day the ozone layer is further perforated; the ice caps are melting, and we’re losing our coastlines.

Fact: one atom of chlorine can destroy more than 100,000 ozone molecules, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) is an organic compound that contains carbon, chlorine, and fluorine. It reacts with oxygen by ripping a hole in the ozone layer.

Where do you find CFCs? Some products/items that contain CFCs include shaving cream, fire extinguishers, chlorine (i.e. swimming pools), and aerosols—not just industrial products, but ones commonly used in domestic settings.

Is anything being done about it? 194 nations have signed an international agreement to end the production of CFCs and other ozone-depleting substances. Since its creation in 1987, the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer has been amended several times to speed up the phasing out of these substances.

Other than that, individual efforts can be taken by those who love their planet. Buying ozone friendly products allows you to join the fight in your own way. Not all hope is lost. Make an effort each day to hurt the planet less. Tell someone to tell someone to stop buying harmful products—keep it going, and love your planet.

What I stand for is what I stand on
